Capsule Filling Machines
THE FEC40: NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE IN CAPSULE FILLING
The FEC40 allows users to produce up to 400,000 capsules per hour. This means that the cost per 1000 capsules drop by up to 30 percent with the same production footprint. Learn more about the first capsule filling machine from Fette Compacting.
THE FUTURE OF THE CAPSULE MARKET
Sven Stegemann is Director for Pharmaceutical Business Development at Capsugel. Within this role he is leading common research projects with all major pharmaceutical as well as SME companies on a global base. He holds a PhD in pharmacology and is an endowed professor for patient-centric drug development and manufacturing at Graz University of Technology in Austria. Mr Stegemann worked in different roles of the pharmaceutical product. We asked him several questions about the future of the capsule market.
PHARMAMARKT 2020: UPSWING TURN FOR GLOBAL PRODUCTION
According to current studies, pharmaceutical producers can look forward to growing demand in the years to come. Growth means that more people receive access to medical care on the one hand while special medication for rare diseases gains in importance on the other. This increases international requirements on flexibility and quality in production.
Machine technology is obliged to offer the right solutions for each product and each requirement – increasingly in accordance with uniform global standards. In an interview, Rainer Krugmann, Global Director Sales at Fette Compacting, provides an outlook as to what trends Fette Compacting can anticipate in the production of solid formulations.
„MORE VEGETARIAN AND ORGANIC CAPSULES”
Scott Anderson, as Director of Operations for Standard Process, leads the overall strategic direction of the manufacturing, distribution, supply chain and engineering functions as well as a 1,000 acre farming operation for the company. Based in Palmyra, Wisconsin, Standard Process is one of the leading companies in food nutrient solutions. The company has been in business since 1929 and offers more than 300 different supplements today. In an interview with What's Next? Anderson explains the role of capsules in the nutrition industry and what challenges come to manufacturers.
FAST, INDIVIDUAL, DIGITAL: WHAT CUSTOMERS EXPECT OF GLOBAL SUPPORT
Trade fairs such as the Interphex 2016 are more than mere platforms for presenting new machinery. They also offer the opportunity to exchange information with regard to current requirements on technical support and consulting. In New York City, Fette Compacting will be availing of the opportunity to interact with American and international pharmaceutical customers in order to find out what they expect of a machine manufacturer: from individual service through around-the-clock availability to secure digital networking. Insights into this issue are provided by Lars Plüschau, Director Global Customer Support.
THE FEC40: A NEW CLASS OF HARD CAPSULE FILLING
What expectations do users have of a next-generation capsule filling machine? How productive and efficient should it be? What should it offer to ensure that users can work optimally with this machine? These were the questions asked by our engineers in the development of the first capsule filling machine produced by Fette Compacting. The result is a premiere in the world of pharmaceutical manufacturing: with a production output of up to 400,000 capsules per hour, the FEC40 sets new standards in the efficiency of capsule filling machines.
STRONG FRIENDS: FISHERMAN’S FRIEND AND THE FE55
Since 1865 the people in Fleetwood, North England, follow the rule: Breathe deeply despite harsh climate. The family company Lofthouse is situated here producing the worldwide known menthol lozenges in its fifth generation. An insight into production indicates what is important when tableting these lozenges and the role played by the FE55 tablet press from Fette Compacting in this process.
CONTINUOUS MANUFACTURING: MONTHS BECOME HOURS
Product approval in real time? Producers of pharmaceuticals and machine manufacturers worldwide are working on this vision. Thanks to Continuous Manufacturing (CM), delays attributable to separate production processes, complex conversions and long offline analyses could soon be a thing of the past. Pilot plants are already available but it’s still early days for technology in the area of commercial pharmaceutical production. In an interview, Dr. Martin Schöler from Fette Compacting outlines the discoveries made by these pilot projects and how the CM vision is to become a reality.
A PRODUCT WITHIN A PRODUCT: CROSS-CONTAMINATION AS A CHALLENGE FOR TABLETING
Pharmaceutical production increasingly involves the use of highly-active ingredients. This is also accompanied by increased demands on containment. Cross-contamination in particular becomes a risk for patient safety and product quality. But what requirements actually apply here and what technologies offer effective protection during tableting?
General overhauls for tablet presses
MAKE THE OLD NEW AGAIN
Fette Compacting has been making tablet presses since 1948. The first-generation machines have long been museum-pieces, but many older tablet presses are, nevertheless, still working today. Christian Peters, Manager of the Factory Rebuild Centre at Fette Compacting, and his team specialize in general overhauls. In an interview with Pharmaproduktion he talks about the options open to users for extending the life-cycle of their machines and getting the best out of their investment.
UNYIELDING IN THE FACE OF TOUGH INGREDIENTS
Pharmaceutical ingredients present tableting tools with tough challenges. Formulations containing minerals, for example, encourage wear. Thermolabile granulates tend to adhere, which presents a particular challenge to continuous production. Users can significantly reduce these effects and optimize the production process through the use of the right punch heads, materials and coatings.
LIT UP IN A FLASH: ACTIVE INGREDIENT ANALYSIS IN TABLETING
With medication, no matter the batch size, every single tablet must contain exactly the same amount of active ingredient in order to permit reliable administration to patients. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) is a suitable inspection method for the material properties of pharmaceutical products. The VisioNIR LS system, from Fette Compacting and visiotec, offers an analytical method whose precision and speed is optimally matched to the requirements of tableting.

TOOLS FOR IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY
Longer lifetime, decreased maintenance time and falling costs for replacing parts - these are indicators of the quality of tableting tools from Fette Compacting, providing for considerable leaps in productivity in the tableting process.
KEEPING AN EYE ON THE FUTURE OF PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTION
More than 160,000 experts representing the process industry visited ACHEMA 2015 in Frankfurt between June 15 and 19. Under the motto of 'Upgrade your Efficiency', Fette Compacting presented its range of solutions for tablet production. Highlights of the exhibition program included premiers of the new FE55 tablet press with a containment option and the Expert Forum organized by Fette Compacting discussing future trends in pharmaceutical production. Three rounds of discussions saw users, experts and scientists consider the topics of Containment, Continuous Production and Operational Excellence, among others.
